Terrell Owners has, for much of the latter parts of his career, been a polarizing NFL figure. He was like a train wreck fans couldn’t look away from or stop from hurling judgment and criticisms. Since his retirement the talk of his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame has been a source of contention and debate. When he was FINALLY accepted after his third year of eligibility, he declined the invitation and did not attend the Hall of Fame ceremonies in Canton, choosing instead to hold his own ceremony and celebration at Tennessee-Chattanooga
Needless to say, he kept people talking.
His disgust with the organization that he felt let their personal opinions delay what should have been his obvious induction years earlier left a bitter taste in his mouth and in many of his fans.
But this ceremony he won’t skip.
Owens WILL be in San Francisco for this and he says he feels honored by the celebration.
I am so humbled to be mentioned with the likes and greats of Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice and many others that have represented the San Francisco 49ers organization,” Owens said in a statement. “I wouldn’t be who I am and have accomplished what I did, number one, without God and without the push of my teammates and coaches, especially Coach Larry Kirksey and Coach George Stewart.
The Bay Area is where I began my career, and I will forever be indebted to the 49ers and recognized as one of the 49ers greats. I am honored to be inducted in the 49ers Hall of Fame as this is a special moment with a special group of individuals. Thank you, again, to the 49ers organization and 49ers Faithful.
Jed York, 49ers CEO is happy to bestow the honor.
“Over the course of eight seasons, the 49ers Faithful were fortunate to have front row seats to watch Terrell Owens develop into one of the most prolific wide receivers in the history of the NFL,” York said in a statement. “Not only was Terrell one of the most physically gifted athletes to ever play the game, but he was also one of the most competitive.”
The ceremony is scheduled for later this year with the date to be announced once the NFL schedule is released.
